Writer’s Quote Wednesday. 18th February 2015

Writer's quote Wednesday. Thanks to Silverthreads
Writer’s quote Wednesday. Thanks to Silverthreading

Hi all:

I’m trying to keep up with the Writer’s Quote Wednesday Feature and thank Siverthreading for the chance to take part in this awesome joint post. It’s a great way to get inspired, share and meet new bloggers.

I had something in mind, but then I read this quote and thought…I think I have the right picture. So this is my quote for today, from Junot Díaz:

Being a writer is an excuse to be a professional reader.
Being a writer is an excuse to be a professional reader.

I love the quote and must admit that was part of my logic when studying American Literature. I “had” to read books! And doing the PhD on films, I not only had to read books but also had to watch movies!

If you want more information about Junot Díaz, this writer from the Dominican Republic came to fame after publishing in 2007 The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. He went on to win the Pulitzer Prize with the same novel. If you want to check, here you can check some of his stories for free. And this is a brief article with highlights from an interview and link to the full interview.

Thanks for reading, thanks to Colleen from Silver Threading for the opportunity (and go on and join in too), and you know, if you’ve enjoyed it, like, comment, share and visit Colleen’s blog!

I am a language teacher, writer, bookworm, and collaborator at Sants 3 Ràdio (a local radio station in Barcelona, where I returned in 2018), who lived in the UK for 25 years and worked for many years as a forensic psychiatrist there. I also have a Ph.D. in American Literature and an MSc in Criminology. I started publishing my stories, in English and Spanish, in 2012 and now have over twenty books available in a variety of genres, a blog (in English and Spanish), and translate books for other authors (English-Spanish and vice versa). In 2020 obtained the CELTA certificate as a language teacher, and offer Spanish and English classes. Writers and readers both in English and Spanish are my friends, colleagues, and allies, and after living in the UK for over twenty-five years, have returned home, to Barcelona, Spain, searching for inspiration for my stories. I also love owls and try to keep fit following fitness YouTube videos.

Pretty cool, you’re right, Pete. And you could always find a reason why you had to watch films that weren’t directly related to the ones you were studying. Research is great! Thanks for the comment!

I agree Christoph. My parents always used to say that I pester them to know what signs and anything written said before I learn to write. I’m still as fascinated as I was then. 🙂

I agree Kitt. I live in hope that some of the great inventions they keep coming up with will save us real time (rather than makes us do even more things) or prolong the hours in the day. Have a great week!

I love this quote Olga. I agree. I read so much more now that I did when I worked full time. Being retired is the best! Thank you for sharing about Junot Diaz. He is one of my favorites. ❤

As I follow your blog it sound like you manage to keep yourself very busy even now but I suspect you might not have been able to fit in such a variety of activities when you were working. 🙂 I’ve read plenty about him but still trying to find time to read more of his work.

I love being busy. Ron and I are painting the interior of the house right now so my blogging gets done when I can. ❤

I hope you’ll show us some pics of the result. For what I’ve seen your house looked amazing already. Have a good painting, blogging, reading, writing and whatever else day!

Thanks Olga. Yes I will share pictures. Our oldest daughter and two grand daughters are coming to visit March 30th. Once the painting is done… We are done! 💟

I loved the quote. I’ve heard about it and even bought his first novel for a friend after hearing it discussed in a review programme, but haven’t managed to read it yet. Reading more about him and his interview, I think I should!
