Have you thought about #volunteering? I’m on the radio! @PenistoneFM

Hi all:

As you all know, life can take some funny detours on the way to wherever it is taking us. I don’t know you, but I have found myself at times at an impasse, in between things. Things are moving but not quite ready yet for the next step or one needs to regroup and rework ones plans.

And there I was. As I suppose many of you, I receive notifications from quite a few places. LinkedIn regularly sends me e-mails suggesting jobs nearby. As I haven’t been at home very much in the last few months I hadn’t paid them that much attention, but just before I went on my holiday I realised they were suggesting volunteering jobs in the area where I live. I’d always thought I’d volunteer at some point ‘when I had more time’ but recently I’ve decided not to put off things because there’s never enough time unless we make the time. I checked Do It organisation and there were quite a few things I was interested in, some very local. As so far I’d always worked away from Penistone (South Yorkshire, UK), where I live, I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to get more involved.

I applied for a job in Penistone FM, went to visit and meet Martin Sugden who agreed to let me try, and now I’m going once a week, on Tuesdays from 5 pm to 8 pm, and sit at a desk under the watchful eye of Andy Riley, who is a fantastic trainer and knows well how to make people feel at ease.

Penistone FM (you can check also in Wikipedia) was formed in 2005 as a non-for-profit community radio station to broadcast around the Penistone and surrounding area on 95.7 FM. The process of obtaining the licence and setting up took some time, and the station finally went on air, live, on the 6th of June 2009. It is entirely run by volunteers, and although I imagine many of you won’t be in the area, you can always check online, here, and there’s even an App you can download.

If you want to know how I’ve found it so far (it’s very early days)…People are great, I love everything (the community ads [I’m now finally up to date with what is happening], the selection of weird news and the Quiz of Doom by Andy), I’m in awe of the time management skills necessary to fit everything in, of the technology, and I hope people enjoy listening to the programme (despite my accent).

Andy tells me I’m doing OK, and hopefully I’ll be doing more and more things as I go along (I started pressing buttons and things last week), so who knows!

I’m still getting to know the people working there, but so far, loving it.

I’ll keep you posted. Go on, check us out! And, why don’t you have a go at volunteering? I’m sure there are many good causes you might be able to contribute to, even if you only have a bit of time every week. And you might learn something, have fun, and what’s more important, help.

Thanks so much to Penistone FM, and Andy Riley in particular for his patience, thanks to all of you for reading, and you know what to do, like, comment, share and CLICK! And consider VOLUNTEERING!

I don’t have much time. I have to have everything packed by the 27th for the movers to pick up on the 28th. Busy times. It will be so worth it. Thanks, Olga. 💗

Well done you. This is really fanrptastic. First of all that you are volunteering – always a good thing to do) but I have a feeling this is something that you will do ver well with. I say that because I love to read your voice, if that makes sense, and so am quite sure you will come across very well, and that people will love your accent:). You have open ended a new door and so who knows what will be revealed.
I am having a visit from the computer gremlins and so please excuse if I don’t comment as much. Hopefully fixed soon. Meanwhile enjoy the day. Janet x

Thanks so much, Janet, for your kind words. I hope listeners get used to my quirkiness. I read about your computer problems in another blog. It must be something going around, because I ended up having the hard drive changed last week and the whole system reinstalled. Now I’ll see…Fingers crossed. I hope your gremlins go soon… Don’t treat them too well!

Loving this, Olga. Go for it. My best job ever was one I held for a few years, as a volunteer coordinator for a new school community. The personal benefits were so much better than a salary, and I learned so much. ☺ Good luck.

Thanks so much. Sounds excellent, Van. I know what you mean. There were quite a few other interesting jobs, and I might try and explore others, time and circumstances permitting…:)

Thanks so much. Funnily enough I did attend a very interesting webinar on how to improve productivity. The truth is that I do try lists, but the important thing is to decide…what the important things are. And living by myself I’ve decided that my standards are mine alone…But doing things that are useful and make us feel better must be top of the list (after the must do..). Be well!

Great news, Olga. I think your accent will be a bonus for the residents of South Yorkshire! Community radio is a great stepping stone, and you may well have found the beginnings of a new (additional) career.
I have had a go at various volunteering jobs since moving to Norfolk. I currently help out at the local windmill, one day a week. Anyone with free time would do well to explore the different opportunities in their area.
Best wishes, Pete.

Thanks so much, Pete. I read one of your posts about the windmill and it must be an amazing place to work. I’m enjoying the experience for the moment, and as you say, who know? Be well!

Thanks, Hugh. You’re very kind. It’s very spontaneous (I have no idea what we’re going to be talking about), but I guess that’s what life is like. I always sound weird when I listen to myself, but at least while I’m talking I don’t hear myself.

Thanks, Hugh. For the moment I’m only learning and Andy is the man in charge, although as there are quite a few gaps in the schedule, if I survive the training there’s the possibility that I might get my own programme. And then, I guess I’ll have a lot of bloggers to talk about! 🙂

I know what you mean when you say that listening to ones self is kind of strange. I think exactly the same thing about my voice when I hear it.

Oh, I do hope you get your own programme. I don’t believe there are any programmes in that UK which cover blogging, so yours would be filling a gap in the market. Radio 4 – here comes Olga 🙂

I sound like my mother (not that I have anything against my mother, but it’s not like I sound to myself…)
Blogs, stories, writing… Who knows? I just hope people enjoy it!

You are always up for new adventures, aren’t you? How exciting! I love how life presents you with neat opportunities and all you have to do is say “Yes!”

I’m finishing up teaching a writing class I’m offering as a fundraiser for my local library. One of my students is an artist. She wants to collaborate with me on writing a children’s book. Her animal illustrations are wonderful. I’m taking this opportunity to say “Yes!” 🙂

It sounds fantastic, Lorna! And the course also sounds amazing. There are quite a few opportunities in local libraries here too. Perhaps that’s next…
It’s true sometimes we have to say no, but we never know where a yes can take us. Looking forward to reading more about the children’s book!

I was going to say I understand, but at best I can say I try to understand. Not the same as personal experience. My friend Montse also suffers from it, but as she lives in Barcelona, I don’t see her as often as I’d like. For what she was telling me, offers of treatment vary a lot depending on where one lives (what they call here, the postcode lottery).

Thanks so much for your kind words, Vashti. I think the great advantage with radio is that you can imagine the people on the other side however you like. It’s a bit like the power of stories and books… ♥

It appears nobody else has asked the obvious question here Olga. Is it pronounced ‘Pennystone’ or ‘Penis tone?’ Come on, someone had to ask. 🙂 Good to see you’re on the wireless by the way.
Cheers
Laurie.

Now, Laurie, fair question. (/ˈpɛnɨstən/ pen-is-tən) So I guess, your first version is closest. Penistone derives from penn the Primitive Welsh, which means head, end, top, height or hill, and the Old English ing, a place-name forming suffix and tun, an enclosure, farmstead, village or estate. It most likely means a farm or village at or called Penning.[2] It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names.[3][4] I’ve seen it in a New York Times post about rude names of towns (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/23/world/europe/23crapstone.html). Unfortunately the hotel they mention has gone now and it’s become a couple of very handsome houses. I used to joke with one of my bosses that Penistone was the centre of the world but hey, who knows?
And thanks so much. From here to… here, probably. ♥

I always ask the awkward questions Olga, my teachers hated me. 🙂 Thanks so much for the in-depth reply. I’m chuffing off to have a look at the other place names now. I have a picture of me outside the town of Cockburn in south Australia, leaning on the sign and grabbing my… well with a pained look on my face too. ❤

Good for you, Olga. Volunteering offers fantastic personal rewards. I have been volunteering since I was in grade school at a whole range of different volunteer ops and I can’t imagine not doing it. Right now I’m in between but I am actively looking for a new venue to lend my services to, Best wishes.

Thanks Michelle. You are right. It’s a great thing to do, and no matter what one’s personal interests are, there’s something for everybody. I had participated in single events (day things), but moved a lot and worried about committing to something I might not be able to sustain. But no matter the amount of time, it can be of help. I hope you find a new project soon. 🙂
