Valentine Day's Special

Let’s Sing of our Love. Love Songs (sort of).

Hi all:

As it’s Valentine’s Day later in the week, and last year I decided to share some poems I like, this year I thought about sharing some songs.

I love musicals, so when I got looking for songs, I couldn’t help myself.

First:

Ava Gardner (yes, really her, not the singer who dubbed her in the movie) in Showboat, singing ‘Can’t help loving that man of mine’. She is so beautiful! Colour cinema was made for her.

I adore Oklahoma. Here, a couple of songs, although I’d happily share the whole show (I actually will leave you a link to the version I saw in London with Hugh Jackman and Maureen Lipman)

You know how people like to make up stories when they see a boy and a girl together, as Curly and Laurey remind us:
People will say we’re in love

But being discreet isn’t always everybody’s cup of tea. I love Ado Annie.
I cain’t say no

In case you feel like watching the whole thing…

You’ve probably guessed I like Rodgers and Hammerstein. South Pacific is another one of my favourites. I must admit the added colours to the movie make the viewing weird but still…(I love the humorous numbers but maybe not for today)

If love makes you feel all lyrical, these two songs are a must (it doesn’t matter how young you are or if it’s not evening or particularly enchanted):
Younger than springtime

Some enchanted evening

I also love West Side Story and I’m sure you’ve also felt like that when in love.
I feel pretty!

And because we sometimes can’t help ourselves…
Mamma Mia! (warning, it’s from the movie!)

This one because I love Billie Holiday (probably Lover Man is my favourite but it makes me too sad):
That Ole Devil Called Love (1945) Billie Holiday

Not sure what made me think of this one. I love the album but I wasn’t very convinced by this song at first. Now it’s one of my favourites and I like the touch of humour:

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss – “Fortune Teller”

I decided this would be an international post and I’d add some songs I also like in Catalan and Spanish. I love this Catalan one.
Josep Carreras: Rosó

I hope you like this one.
The three tenors: Amapola

This is a very beautiful song with gorgeous lyrics. There are many versions so I randomly chose one.
Laura Pausini y Miguel Bosé: Te amaré

I’ve already told you I love musicals. Mar i Cel is a play by a very famous Catalan dramatist, Àngel Guimerà. We studied his plays in High School, and I really loved ‘Mar i cel’ a play set up in the Middle Ages in Spain, some time after the Catholic King and Queen had expelled both the Jews and the Moors. The pirates succeed in taking control of a ship where Spanish soldiers were escorting some young women destined to become nuns. The love story between the pirate Captain, Said, and Blanca, a noble young woman, is set for tragedy. As impossible loves go it’s pretty out there. A few years later, a Catalan theatre company, Dagoll Dagom (last year they reached 40 years staging musicals) took it to the stage with great success. I went to see it and I loved it. It is one of my favourites.

This song takes place shortly after Blanca goes to Said’s quarters with the intention of killing him and he ends up telling her the story of how the soldiers killed his mother, and asks her to kill him. She cries, and the song is when they realise there might be something… (She wonders why did she cry when he is an enemy of the faith and a pirate, and he wonders why did she cry…? )

Mar i cel: Per què he plorat? (Why did I cry?)

This one is completely irrelevant, but hey, I still remember being on the first row of the theatre, right next to the orchestra conductor and seeing the ship moving around. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.
Mar i cel: Himne dels pirates (Hymn of the pirates) (Dagoll Dagom)

Thank you for reading, or rather listening and watching today, like, share, comment and happy Valentine! (Sharing some relevant books on Friday). Let me know your favourite songs.

You young softy you. What a romantic soul you have. Some fantastic songs there but I notice you went for Sassy in West Side Story.I love Maria and think it one of the most romantic songs. I especially like the P.J.Proby version oddly enough as I do of Somewhere.
Early as it is, I hope you have a Wonderful Valentine’s Day on Saturday. It’s a very lucky person who gets to wine and dine you.

Thanks David. No plans for Valentine’s but might see if I can find a musical somewhere. West Side Story is one of my favourites too. I like Maria, Tonight, although I also love the funnier ones (America) and the choreography in ‘Cool’. I’ve seen a few productions of it, but I never get bored of watching it. I like the Kiri Te Kanawa and Josep Carreras version too, that I have (Josep Carreras is from my city and I have a soft spot for him). I hope that whatever you do, you have a great time too. Big hugs!

Let it go, of course it’s the song from Frozen…:) Mind you, I think you need a better voice than mine for that one. Not that it has ever stopped everybody. I’d love to do a flash mob at some point. The cast of Mar i Cel did one to promote the show and it’s great fun…

Great selection here Olga. I love south pacific, well most musicals in general i guess.
Cheers
Laurie.

Thanks Laurie. I had problems cutting it short…I love South Pacific for the combination of lyrical and rather funny songs…’There is nothing like a dame’ is a big favourite of mine, although not very politically correct but…

I love the bass…You need somebody with a pretty good voice. I did a course on Musicals at Mount Holyoke years back and I wrote my final paper on Oklahoma, South Pacific and a far less known musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein, called ‘Allegro’, about a doctor. I don’t think it’s even been performed since it opened, and although it didn’t do too badly, it wasn’t a runaway success. It was quite critical of vain, rich people and had a sort of Greek choir at the back. Probably too experimental. I only got to read it but would have loved to watch it.

A music aficionado Olga? Good to hear. Among other things I was exposed to good music from an early age and I think I’ve watched most musicals from the 50’s onwards. I must say I haven’t heard of Allegro though.

I don’t think it ever made it out of the States although according to the tutor of the course (who had been a performer herself) some of the songs were still performed (The Gentleman is a Dope?). I found an article saying somebody was trying to revive it last year but not sure what happened. Have a great rest of the week Laurie!

It sounds like the musical is resting in peace. I’ll try my best to enjoy the weekend Olga.
Cheers
Laurie.

I hope it doesn’t die, I just think they’ll never reach the heights of musicals from the 40′ through to the 60’s. My weekend will be great. 🙂

They had serious problems with the flying scenes. Not even Sting could make it work…Financial crisis the musical? Mind you, I thought ‘Enron’ was fabulous, although it seems in the US they didn’t like it very much. Some musicals are fabulous despite strange storylines. I loved ‘Dancer in the Dark’ and the subject matter is truly non-musical stuff…

Too much sticky web stuff around then? I guess the yanks wouldn’t like anything to do with Enron. yep, it’s a strange storyline alright. 🙂

I think there were problems with the wires and flying…I think they had a few mishaps…No good to have a character fall on you from the stage, even if it is Spiderman. Yes…There are sore points in every culture (or at least period). But some creators can pull off nearly anything, and the opposite is true, some great stories do very badly…Having read the original of Oklahoma I can say it’s nothing to write home about. The book ‘South Pacific’ was based on a James A. Michener novel (‘Tales of the South Pacific’ I seem to recall) was much more interesting, although very different from the musical. But they had input from Joshua Logan, who had been in WWII and I’m sure that made a huge difference.

I also like West Side story and South Pacific, though Cabaret is probably my favourite musical, with Bugsy Malone in there somewhere too. Thanks for this international mix Olga, most enjoyable.
Best wishes, Pete.

Like

Thanks Pete. Yes, I love Cabaret too, although maybe a bit on the dark side for Valentine. Bugsy Malone I’d like to see live some day. Have a lovely day!

Olga, what an awesome collection. I’m so glad i made time to look at this before work. (Re the first few, i can’t imagine how they managed to sing while wearing those corsets! That is an additional talent.) Wonderful songs. Happy Valentine’s Day to you my friend. Hugs 😀

Like

Thanks Teagan! Just looking for the songs put a smile on my face. You’re right about the corsets. Like dancing on high heels…brings to mind Ginger Rogers comment about Fred Astaire “I did all he did, but in high heels and backwards”. Have a lovely day!

🙂 We might have to write a musical between all of us. I don’t know anything about music but I’ve met a few musicians in Twitter and I think we have a few here too…

Oh my, what a wonderful selection of songs for Valentine’s day you have shared with us, Olga. And thank you so, so much for including one from Mamma Mia! (You know just how much I love that movie).

I just wish they would show some of these old movies on BBC2 on a Saturday afternoon, just like they used to, years ago. I can see myself singing along to them and having the perfect bit of relaxation while others choose to go shopping!

Happy Valentine’s Day to you. ❤

Like

Thanks Hugh! Yes, it’s true you love ‘Mamma Mia!’. They don’t seem to show these films very often these days although people still love them. I think they tend to leave them for Christmas. I remember being at the gym on the treadmill watching ‘Singing in the rain’ (another must…). Happy Valentine’s!

Like

Yes, Christmas time can be great for seeing these films although I do wonder sometimes why they will show Easter Parade at Christmas 🙂 Mind you, that also goes for the BBC showing repeats of Christmas Specials during the summer. Just what is the thinking behind all of that?

Like

Yes, I’ve always been puzzled by that, but I suspect not a great deal of thought goes into programming, unless it’s their own or something they consider big…

Like

Thanks Tess. It’s weird that so many people like them but they don’t tend to show them on the telly very often (although I’m lucky to have seen them in a the theatre a few times…) 🙂

I normally don’t, although staying with my mother at the moment and she watches more TV than me. There are certain things I find difficult to resist.

Like

Thanks Billy Ray. I know I can tell you to sing them as you shared one of your recordings and you have an excellent voice. Have a great Valentine’s!

Like

Thanks Hilary. I love Rosó. It has a very special place in my heart and that of many Catalan people and I think that’s why it’s very special hearing him singing it. I love Carreras and I’ve seen him a couple of times live. I could keep posting songs forever but I’ll revisit songs and musicals in the future for sure.
