Archives for the month of: January, 2015

Hi all:

As you know on Fridays I bring you guest authors and new books. I’ve known today’s author Vashti Quiroz-Vega for a while, through Twitter, and her blog, but for some reason she’d gone  under my radar and hadn’t been in one of my Friday blogs. I followed one of her horror stories in her blog at the end of last year and I realised I should bring her here, so much I enjoyed it.

So, here is Vashti:

Author Vashti Quiroz-Vega

Author Vashti Quiroz-Vega

Hello! My name is Vashti Quiroz-Vega. I’m a writer of Suspense, Thriller, Fantasy and Horror. I also enjoy mixing in some Humor and Romance into my stories.

From the time I was a young kid, writing has been my passion. I’ve always been a writer I just didn’t know it until much later. For me, it is easier to express my thoughts on paper than with the spoken word. I enjoy making people feel an array of emotions with my writing. I like my audience to laugh one moment, cry the next and clench their jaws after that.

My love of animals and nature are often incorporated in my stories. You’ll read intriguing things about various animals, nature and natural disasters commingled in my character driven novels.

I love to read almost as much as I love to write. Some of my favorite authors are Stephen King, M. Night Shyamalan, Michael Crichton, Anne Rice, J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling and Dan Brown.

Her first book is:

The Basement by Vashti Quiroz-Vega

The Basement by Vashti Quiroz-Vega

A kid should not be aware of his own heartbeat, he thought.

Robbie is an ordinary boy in the city who struggles with the desire to prove himself to his friends, his enemies, and himself. When Robbie’s father, a stubborn man determined to teach his son through tough love, witnesses Robbie being bullied, he forces Robbie to face his fears. Robbie is then sentenced to a frightening challenge–staying in the basement alone for a night. But what lies in the dark recesses of the basement? Will Robbie make it out alive and well? Will the urban legend about the terrifying creatures that hide in the dark basement prove to be true? And most importantly, will Robbie prove to his friends and his father that he is brave enough to take on the challenge?

The Basement is a tale of angst, teamwork and solutions, treasure hunts and adventure, and facing fears. It is a focus on the small world of one group of preteens and the very real and wondrous world they face.

Don’t forget to check her blog:

There are many stories, haikus and you’ll get to know lovely Vashti, that’s in itself more than enough reason to visit.

Thanks so much to Vashti for visiting my blog, thanks to all of you for reading and if  you’ve enjoyed it, like, comment, share and CLICK!

Prostate (image: Cancer Research UK)

Instituto Nacional (US):

Hi all:

This is not a topic I tend to talk about usually. I’m a doctor, a psychiatrist to be more precise, but I started the blog to talk about writing and miscellaneous topics, rather than to provide medical advice (there are many sites that offer that and of course, you should always be guided by your doctor and health professionals).

Prostate (image: Cancer Research UK)

Prostate (image: Cancer Research UK)

Due to personal circumstances I’ve been thinking about prostate cancer. My Dad was diagnosed with stage 4 of prostate cancer in November 2013 (it had already spread to the bones by the time it was diagnosed). He’d never presented with any localised symptoms at prostate level (no urinary symptoms) and other symptoms were very unspecific aches and pains…I remember the class when the urology professor discussed that topic. ‘In the autumn of life when everything decays and shrinks, in men there is an organ that grows and flowers, the prostate’. And his advice was that any men over 50 should be checked. Although at the time tests were quite invasive, these days blood tests (PSA), although not 100%, can raise a high suspicion.

Video of symptoms:

Not everyone experiences symptoms of prostate cancer. Many times, signs of prostate cancer are first detected by a doctor during a routine check-up.

Some men, however, will experience changes in urinary or sexual function that might indicate the presence of prostate cancer. These symptoms include:

A need to urinate frequently, especially at night

Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine

Weak or interrupted flow of urine

Painful or burning urination

Difficulty in having an erection

Painful ejaculation

Blood in urine or semen

Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs

You should consult with your doctor if you experience any of the symptoms above.

Because these symptoms can also indicate the presence of other diseases or disorders, such as BPH (Benign Prostate Hypertrophy) or prostatitis, men will undergo a thorough work-up to determine the underlying cause. (

Ask, pester, don’t just let it go or think it’s nothing. It’s better if the doctors tell you that. There are lots of treatments and it’s always best to put your minds at rest.

I leave you a few websites with plenty of information, but check with your doctor and health professionals:

And a reader of the original post suggested I share this post with you about the effects of chemotherapy (my father experimented quite a few of them):

Effects of chemotherapy

Most people will recover fully from those effects, but it is worth being fully informed, prepared, and asking questions in  case of doubt.

Here is the link to the above post if you want to check that useful resource too:

Of course, check information about other types of cancer and be aware.

Thanks for reading, and if you’ve found it interesting, please share, comment, like and CLICK! And do check!

If you’re wondering about my Dad, he’s had hormonal treatment, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, many complications and things haven’t gone too well. So please, do take care.

Hi all:

As all of you who’ve been reading me for a while know well, I published my first audiobook last year (Escaping Psychiatry) and I’m hoping to get some of my other books into audio format. I published a post about ACX and thanks to that post I got chatting with other authors who’re also trying the route of the audiobook. We all noticed that there seem to be few outlets for advertising or exchanging information on audiobooks and it got me thinking. I decided to try and do regular posts on audiobooks, once a month, and see if I could build up a network of bloggers, authors and readers/listeners.

Pauline Baird-Jones is one of the authors who commented on my post and I decided to check her out. By sheer volume of audiobooks and because she and her books sound thoroughly amazing, I thought she would feature as my first guest. As she has so many of her books in audio, I’ve decided to do two posts.

First, a bit about her:

Author Pauline Baird-Jones

Author Pauline Baird-Jones

Pauline Baird Jones had a tough time with reality from the get-go. After “schooling” from four, yes FOUR brothers, she knew that some people needed love and others needed shooting. Pauline figured she could do both. Romantic suspense was the logical starting point, but there were more worlds to explore, more rules to break and minds to bend. She grabbed her pocket watch and time travel device and dove through the wormhole into the world of science fiction and even some Steampunk.

Now she wanders among the genres, trying a little of this and a lot of that, rampaging through her characters’ lives like Godzilla because she does love her peril (when it’s not happening to her). Never fear, she gives her characters happy endings. Well, the good characters. The bad ones get justice.

Pauline just released her 13th novel, Relatively Risky. She’s not superstitious about it, well, maybe a little. But the whole loving/killing thing that needs to be done? Doing it fictionally is just better for everyone. And for Pauline, who hates the thought of getting strip searched and jailed. Ahem.

Author Pauline Baird-Jones. Don't mess with her!

This is her Amazon page, so you can check all her other books:

I decided to bring you her series of The Lonesome Lawman series plus a bonus, today.

I Love Your Cupcakes (Me encantan tus cupcakes) de Olga Núñez Miret. Portada de Lourdes Vidal

I Love Your Cupcakes (Me encantan tus cupcakes) de Olga Núñez Miret.

Hi all:

We’ve left 2014 behind and most people tend to take stock of what happened the previous year and think about the future. Plenty of things happened to me last year (and I’m sure the same goes for all of you) but I wanted to look at my writing and books.

Escaping Psychiatry cover by Ernesto Valdés

Escaping Psychiatry cover by Ernesto Valdés

In January 2014 I published Escaping Psychiatry. This book is a compilation of three novellas (psychological thrillers) with the same protagonist, Mary, a psychiatrist and writer whose attempts at dedicating herself exclusively to writing are thwarted once and again by friends or circumstances that keep dragging her back (kicking and screaming) into psychiatry. The three novellas: Cannon FodderTeamwork, and Memory are quite different in subject and touch on abuse, racism, prejudice, police corruption, murder, serial killers, rape…

If you want to check in more detail you can always look inside or get a sample, here:

Or in paper:

This book is also my first one to be available as an audiobook:

And if you fancy listening to a sample you can check this video in You Tube:

Family, Lust and Cameras

Family, Lust and Cameras

In May 2014 I published a story that I had written a while back, but I felt was very appropriate to the times of surveillance and privacy invasion we live in, Family, Lust and Cameras. It’s a dark story of obsession, mind control and abusive relationships. Can you imagine what would you feel if your life became The Rear Window and you knew somebody was watching you all the time? Well, you can read this novella and see.

I Love Your Cupcakes cover by Lourdes Vidal

I Love Your Cupcakes cover by Lourdes Vidal

In September 2014 I published I Love Your Cupcakes, a sweet romance, where the three protagonists (Dulce, Adelfa and Storm) end up taking part in a TV baking competition and discover that one can find love in the most unlikely places. An upbeat and fun book to read, I recommend it if you’re having a fed-up day.

And in paper:

Angelic Business 1

In November I took part in NaNoWriMo and won! I decided to write the third in a series of Young Adult/New Adult books I’ve been working on. For the time being the series is called Angelic Business and the books are: Pink Matters, Shapes of Greg and Pink, Demon or Angel?

Angelic Business 3Pink Demon or Pink

Angelic Business 1 (mask)

As you can see I don’t have a cover yet, and as it’s going to be a series I’ll have to give it some thought.

I’ve published the draft of the first book in Wattpad (I’ll remove it when I publish it) and at the moment I’m editing and translating them all, with the plan of publishing them fairly close to each other…

Here is the link to the first one in Wattpad:

Ah, and I leave you the link to another story I also published in Wattpad that at the moment I’m not thinking of publishing anywhere else:

In case you want to check on the rest of my work and links to other versions of my books, here is my website:

Now that I’ve told you what I’ve been doing and what I’m going to be doing, it’s time to wish you a Happy Year 2015, ask you about your projects and wish you good luck with them . And as always:

Thanks for reading, and you know what to do, like, share, comment, and if you fancy, CLICK!
