Do you like audiobooks? Try Pauline Baird-Jones’s.

Hi all:

As all of you who’ve been reading me for a while know well, I published my first audiobook last year (Escaping Psychiatry) and I’m hoping to get some of my other books into audio format. I published a post about ACX and thanks to that post I got chatting with other authors who’re also trying the route of the audiobook. We all noticed that there seem to be few outlets for advertising or exchanging information on audiobooks and it got me thinking. I decided to try and do regular posts on audiobooks, once a month, and see if I could build up a network of bloggers, authors and readers/listeners.

Pauline Baird-Jones is one of the authors who commented on my post and I decided to check her out. By sheer volume of audiobooks and because she and her books sound thoroughly amazing, I thought she would feature as my first guest. As she has so many of her books in audio, I’ve decided to do two posts.

First, a bit about her:

Author Pauline Baird-Jones

Pauline Baird Jones had a tough time with reality from the get-go. After “schooling” from four, yes FOUR brothers, she knew that some people needed love and others needed shooting. Pauline figured she could do both. Romantic suspense was the logical starting point, but there were more worlds to explore, more rules to break and minds to bend. She grabbed her pocket watch and time travel device and dove through the wormhole into the world of science fiction and even some Steampunk.

Now she wanders among the genres, trying a little of this and a lot of that, rampaging through her characters’ lives like Godzilla because she does love her peril (when it’s not happening to her). Never fear, she gives her characters happy endings. Well, the good characters. The bad ones get justice.

Pauline just released her 13th novel, Relatively Risky. She’s not superstitious about it, well, maybe a little. But the whole loving/killing thing that needs to be done? Doing it fictionally is just better for everyone. And for Pauline, who hates the thought of getting strip searched and jailed. Ahem.

I have never tried an audiobook. Do you need an i-pod style gadget or similar? Sorry to seem like a techno-dunce, but I really have no idea. I think it would depend a lot on the voice reading it too, as to whether or not I found it enjoyable..
Best wishes, Pete.

Thanks Pete. Some of the audiobooks might be available in CD format, although the majority would be MP3. You would need an MP3 player or you could use your own computer. You could also turn the MP3 into a CD using your computer. An i-pod would definitely work but there are many others and if you buy from Amazon they also have a music App that I suspect would work just the same. I have a Kindle and can listen to the audiobooks with it. I agree that different narrators will make for a very different experience. It’s quite an experience for the author too…
If you use your local library they usually have a lot of books in audio format available (I think they tend to be CDs, or tapes in the old times).
Have a great weekend.

Thanks Pete. Yes. Depending on your phone or if you have a tablet you might be able to use that but MP3 players are very affordable these days.

Thanks Teagan. Pauline is an amazing lady. I know we had a chat about audios and things might further develop. If you discover any interesting ones I’m building up my list… Happy weekend!

Like Pete above I’d like more info on audiobooks please Olga. Can they be downloaded to a Kindl or must it be something like an MP3. Is an audiobook expensive to make? Is there a stable of session readers or can you find someone to read for yourself?
Ia audible the service you need to make an audiobook , the only service, and do they make sure the books reach amazon etc?

Hi David. I did a post on ACX a while back (https://olganm.wordpress.com/2014/11/25/what-do-you-think-of-audiobooks-do-you-know-any-narrators-acx-audios-and-a-cupcake-project/) where I discussed a bit more of the process. There are other places, and individual studios and narrators might offer their services, but the biggest player is ACX. They do distribute to Amazon and i-Tunes. Some authors are happy to do their own readings, narrations (that seems to be mostly the case with self-help or technical books, rather than fiction, but it depends on the set of skills), and if you can follow the instructions in ACX and deliver the product in the format they want, it’s then just a process of waiting for their review, etc. Otherwise it’s possible to post and pitch a project and see if any narrators, producers, are interested. You can propose a 50% split of royalties (in that case there’s no upfront payment) or pay for the production of the audio, the same as we’d pay for an editor or a cover designer.
As I told Pete it’s possible to listen to the audiobooks using an MP3 player, but also in the computer and the Kindle (it has a set that states audio, and if you buy it from Amazon and I think Audible too it would just appear there). Oh, and the phone as well, depending on the model.
ACX is the production part of Audible and Audible do distribute it widely.
Big weekend hugs to you!

Thanks so much Olga.I must have missed the info before or not needed it at the time. That’s very interesting. I know for sure it would not be me reading my own book. I tried that with very poor effect on Youtube…never again.

I wouldn’t dare with mine either. Every time I hear my voice in an interview I’m horrified for weeks. I’ve been thinking about the Kindle thing and audios. It probably depends on the model. I have a Fire and that definitely seems to have all the bells and whistles, but I’m sure you’d be able to listen to them in your tablet.

I love audio books…..I remember a period when I was living in Wales, when my eyes were giving me problems….I used to listen to audio books every night before sleep.
Also they are wonderful for really old people, like my 92 year old Mother who can relax, sit back and enjoy….
Pauline sounds like a very interesting writer….I will put her books on my list to read.
Meanwhile, have a wonderful weekend. Janet:)

Thanks Janet. Yes, Pauline is a real character and loves Audiobooks. I’ll bring the rest of her catalogue to the blog soon, as she does write a big variety of books. Like everything else, audiobooks are not for everybody but they can make some tasks much more palatable (long drives, housework…) and can return the pleasure of books to people with eyesight problems. And of course, if you find a narrator you like that enhances the experience even more. I hope you enjoy Pauline’s books and happy and magical weekend, Janet.

Great! I would say pick and choose Sarah, although I can’t imagine I’d be ever able to afford your talent. At the moment I’m thinking of ‘I Love Your Cupcakes’…although of course, I have a NA series that should be coming up soon too…I hope you sort the computer issues soon. 🙂

I know the feeling. Have you thought about offering your services in ACX? I’m sure you’d get a fair amount of work with your experience.
