Reblog. Here remembering the beginning of my blogging adventure. ‘Trying to Blog’. And and invitation

Hi all:

Yes, I keep on writing, and as promised, I’ve been having a look at old posts. And this time I decided to go back to the very beginning.

My first post was on the 16th of October 2012 and I called it ‘Trying to Blog’. Bless!

Here I repost it, with some clarifications and a bit of embellishment (I don’t think I had worked out the use of bold in the blog). I also decided to add a picture…because it’s pretty.

Here it goes, traveling back in time to 16th October 2012 (Ah, don’t miss a special invitation at the very end):

Hi all:

I’m Olga and although I’ve been writing (and reading) since I was a child, I’ve never focused on it. There have always been other things, like studying Medicine, then Psychiatry, then working…Every so often I take one of those life-changing decisions. I’m never quite sure if they’re due to tiredness or desperation, or a mixture of the two. Do you know that strong feeling that you should be doing something else or that there must be more to life? I came to the UK after trying unsuccessfully to find a job as a doctor back home (Barcelona). I’m not very patient and I tend to give myself time-limits. ‘If such and such hasn’t happened in…a month, a year, 3 years…it’s time to move on. In the case of the job (or an exam to get a job) 3 years was my limit. And after some years training and working in psychiatry one good day I reflected that there were many other things that I really enjoyed (literature in particular). I always thought I might go back to university after retiring and study, but that particular day I thought: ‘what am I waiting for?    What if I could make a living out of teaching at university or found some other job related to it? Let’s try it now.’ I loved the degree (American Literature at Sussex University), including the year abroad (Mount Holyoke) to the point that I stayed a further 3 years and completed a PhD (the Films of David Mamet). No jobs came my way, and tired of working as a locum psychiatrist after over a year I decided to find a full time permanent job (yes, I know, not many of them these days) in psychiatry. Because I had worked in forensic psychiatry before and I found the dealings with the criminal justice system particularly interested those are the jobs I’ve done since. (Since publishing this post I had another one of those moments and I left my job in March this year. Now I’m writing, translating and exploring other avenues. Read this post for more details.)

After a health scare this year (thankfully only a scare, now three years back and no further developments) I again came to one of those turning points on the road when you realise all those things you’re saving to do some time in the future might be left undone. Carpe diem! Let’s try to see if my writing can come to anything.

I’ve been reading a lot about self-publishing and realise that although technically pretty easy, just getting your book out there isn’t enough and you have to convince somebody to read it (and not only your Mum. By the way, although my mother doesn’t understand the technical aspects of it, she’s very enthusiastic. She’s always been of the opinion that anything that makes me happy must be good. If only…). So social networking and social media are the word. And there we are…trying. I have  webpage (another attempt…it will change I hope), a facebook page (not quite used to the concept) a Twitter account (I quite like twitter although it is difficult to strike the balance of spending enough time there but not letting it take over your whole life. Maybe it will get better with time), and now…I was missing the blog.

I’m not sure what I’ll be writing about but if I find anything that I find interesting or useful, I’ll bring it here. I also intend to post how my adventure on self-publishing is going.

Several people have suggested that I might be able to advice on psychiatric matters (I don’t mean treating people or giving consultations, but rather on a creative capacity). Do ask if you want to run ideas by me. I’ll try and answer if I have a useful answer (or can signpost).

And I’ll try and not talk about the weather.

I intend to also blog in Spanish, so that is still to come.

Thanks and feel free to contact me via Facebook or Twitter also.

Good luck and be good!

And more of her dresses!

And as promised, the invitation. Sally Ember is interviewing me live tomorrow at 10 am Eastern US Time. I know not everybody might be able to catch it live, but she’s also kindly posting the interview in You Tube, so you might be able to listen to it at a more convenient time and date.

Here I leave you the Promo Post that has all the information:

I am a language teacher, writer, bookworm, and collaborator at Sants 3 Ràdio (a local radio station in Barcelona, where I returned in 2018), who lived in the UK for 25 years and worked for many years as a forensic psychiatrist there. I also have a Ph.D. in American Literature and an MSc in Criminology. I started publishing my stories, in English and Spanish, in 2012 and now have over twenty books available in a variety of genres, a blog (in English and Spanish), and translate books for other authors (English-Spanish and vice versa). In 2020 obtained the CELTA certificate as a language teacher, and offer Spanish and English classes. Writers and readers both in English and Spanish are my friends, colleagues, and allies, and after living in the UK for over twenty-five years, have returned home, to Barcelona, Spain, searching for inspiration for my stories. I also love owls and try to keep fit following fitness YouTube videos.

Thanks Teagan. I loved the dresses (we truly saw a bit of everything in Florence but as I love owls I was particularly taking by that dress). As the interview is live I can’t give you any insights yet but I hope it won’t be boring!

Yes, indeed. I always think of it as the Dixie Chicks put it going ‘the long way round’. I see from your blog that you’re also looking at maybe putting more time into non-clinical things…I hope it goes all right. It’s difficult to find a balance. It’s not easy to simple “do your job” in certain circumstances…

Thanks David. I imagine it happens to most of us, but I had no idea at that point about what I was going to do with the blog. Funnily enough, over two years later, I still have no idea, but it has gathered a bit of momentum and it’s still alive so…we’ll keep going!

Thanks Mary/Martie. I find it’s more difficult to start again after you’ve stopped than to just keep going. I’m trying to see if the eternal motion machine is possible…in writing terms. 😉

Good morning, Olga…I really enjoyed reading this…and getting to know you more. The word that kept coming to mind, and it’s a word I understand and know well…is persistence!…Don’t ever give up on dreams no matter how tricky the road might be….and it’s those turning points in life that often lead us to wonderful places. I am so pleased to have met you through cyber space:) janet.

Thanks Janet. I’m also very pleased to have met you and my great group of blogger friends. Meeting so many people from so many different walks of life, even if in most cases is only a “virtual” meeting, is worth the adventure of blogging. I have learned things, I have shared experiences, I have admired great works of art (like yours), I have read fanciful stories, listened to music, watched videos, learned new recipes…With Marty/Mary Meddlemore, whom I have been corresponding with quite a while (nearly as long as the blog has been up and going) we have a motto, ‘keep going’. Do not give up. I agree with you about persistence. There will be many reasons to give up, and many people who’ll tell you it’s not worth it, but the heart knows better. Have a magical day, Janet.

Reblogged this on Smorgasbord – Variety is the spice of life and commented:
Do you remember your first posts on your blog? Olga is revisiting some of hers and it is terrific that a new audience gets to see them. I have been reposting for the last few weeks and in the beginning if I was lucky one or two people would view and like. All of us have worked hard to produce well crafted content for our blogs and a year or so along the line if you check I bet there are a few hundred more followers who might just appreciate getting the chance to read them. I don’t archive in months but in topic as I found with health issues it is easier for people popping in to pick a subject that they are interested in. Take a look back and perhaps a 2014 review of your favourite posts! Great job Olga, glad you brought those frocks out for another airing….abrazos

Thanks Sally! Yes, it’s true that time can make a lot of difference, and it’s worth checking back to see what posts we have on the bag. It can have a very strange effect of staring at a slightly younger version of your reflection in a mirror but…
The frocks are a recent addition (from an exhibition in the Museum of Costumes in Florence) but I thought they’d give a bit of colour. By the way, I’m loving your series of suggestions for Christmas presents!

What a great idea, Olga. I have been thinking of reposting my very first post, just to show how my writing has changed since then (I think it’s changed a lot but I’ll let my followers decide on that). Now I have read your first post, I think I will go ahead and repost it early in the New Year, just before my blog reaches one year old.
Thank you for showing me the way on this one as I really was very undecided and have been for quite a while.

Thanks Hugh. I usually do some reblogs during holidays, but I tried and feature either classics or posts about other people. I didn’t remember what my first post was like until I decided to go back. It’s interesting for us and I guess it might be for new readers. I’m looking forward to reading your first one!

I’m a great believer in reposting older posts, Olga. In fact I’m going to write a post about the subject soon after reading a comment from somebody who said they were such terrible things and caused readers to unfollow.
I’m planning to repost my first ever post early in the New Year.

Loved reading this, Olga. Look how far you’ve come and the many ‘roads’ you’ve taken along your journey. Fantastic! Inspired to re-visit a few of my old posts because of you. Blessings.

Thanks Kim. It’s been a journey. And it’s true I’ve many people on the way who weren’t there at the time so…I look forward to read some of your old posts too:)

Thanks so much! Most of us I imagine find everybody else more interesting than ourselves…I agree about the dresses. I hope you can catch the interview but I’ll be sharing the You Tube link for people to catch up whenever they have a chance. 🙂

Thanks Hugh. I guess it’s a matter of opinion and it will depend on the post but when a lot of time has passed and you have new followers…I assumed if I didn’t remember it readers wouldn’t either!
