Hi all:
I have mentioned a few times that I am planning some changes. I am leaving my job by the end of March. Yes, I know it’s not the best time to leave a job. But…
“There is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing”. (Aristotle)
Why am I leaving? There are a variety of reasons, but I’ve found this reflection by Steve Jobs that gets to the heart of it:
“For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” (Steve Jobs)
I’ve made some changes to my life in recent years. I moved to the UK now many years back, I studied psychiatry and worked in it, I decided to leave it and studied American Literature (BA and PhD) and came back to psychiatry for a few years. More recently I’ve started publishing my books (I’ve been writing for many years but it was never the right moment. You know how it is). I loved studying Literature. I’ve always loved books and reading, and it was a fantastic period of my life, even though I had to do locums and work during my holidays. I have loved some jobs, or to be more specific, some periods at some of my jobs. But since taking up writing more seriously, the gap between what I’d really love to do and what I do everyday has become more evident.
And so, as Mark Twain says:
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do, so throw off the bowlines, sail away from safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream, Discover.” (Mark Twain)
I’ve tried to do what in Spain we call ‘to swim and keep an eye on your clothes’, to have it all: security and adventure and do what I love. It doesn’t work. Maybe there are more important things.
“What’s money? A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do.” (Bob Dylan)
I hope that applies to a woman too. (Don’t worry. I only need to look after myself and have no dependants.)
After all, the definition of success is personal:
“Success is falling nine times and getting up ten.” (Jon Bon Jovi)
And:
“He has achieved success who has worked well, laughed often, and loved much.”(Elbert Hubbard)
I think I need to laugh more. See if I manage.
“You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.” (Christopher Columbus)
I hope you come with me!
Thanks for reading and if you fancy liking, sharing or commenting, don’t let me stop you!

Olga, your varied feelings come through clearly. I’ve been there a few times in the past… and well… I’m there yet again now. We reinvent ourselves. It’s something that most would never dare.
I give you two more quotes for your collection.
* “I couldn’t wait for success, so I went ahead without it…” Jonathan Winters
* “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do…” Eleanor Roosevelt
Mega-hugs my friend,
teagan

Thanks so much for the two quotes. Yes, I’ve been there a few times before, but I think the other times I was looking for this one answer (another degree, another job…), this thing that would fix everything. I know is more complicated. As far as it’s not boring…I agree with both the quotes, and indeed share Winters’s view. There’s never a right time to do something. The time is now.

Loved the post. I’ve left you a comment there. Yes, never keep still and think you’ve got there. Try new things. The real failure is never trying anything.

I’m sure you know Olga that whatever journey you start on won’t be alone. Many friends will be sailing beside you to keep a watchful eye on the wind and blow a bit harder if it falters at all. If you go back to Barcelona to make this change you’ll only ever be an email or a blog post away and your support will be there.
I wish you the very best of luck and will be willing you to succeed.

Thanks David. Yes, one of the good things about our digital world is the ease with which you can connect. I might need somebody to come and drag me if I get stuck, but hopefully we’ll be sharing stories as usual. At the moment I’ll relish having time to think what to do. But I want to keep it flexible. The adventure can be going to the universe and beyond or to the world of imagination. It doesn’t matter as far as we enjoy it.

Olga, I salute you! As a woman who has made a radical change to her life in the past year I think I know where you’re coming from and you have done the right thing. Be true to you and what you need, in the end you have to live with yourself and it has no use spending your days wishing things were different if you are the one that can make a change and be the happier for it.

Olga, whan an inspiration you are! Best wishes coming from the Lone Star state, here in the U.S. of A. I think it was Oprah Winfrey who said that “everyone has a story to tell.” Whether or not you will be telling your story, the fact that you will be telling a story is so very important. 🙂

Thanks for your encouragement Marilyn. Sometimes we’re so busy with other things that we forget to tell our story and even to live our lives to the full. I hope to be able to tell my story and the many interesting stories I might find on the way. Thanks!

Fantastic! I get excited by change, and the people who are making changes! ‘A change is as good as a rest’ is another quote. I love the way you have pieced together quotes to make this inspirational quote. I hope it inspires lots of people to think about their situations – it will inspire me! 🙂
